I have to ask, have you attempted to store your PLA in ziplock bags with desiccant? Maybe you are and this experience is based on just age?
I can easily agree the properties of PLA are pretty much non-disclosed to entry consumers, but if you do a fair amount of research you will find out this happens due to humidity and water absorption in the plastic. If you store it in airtight containers along with working desiccant you should get longer shelf life.
That being said I suppose this is still very "inconvenient". I found that ziplocks aren't what they used to be and I am using a new bag every time I change rolls.
